From my understanding, the author expresses concern over the role that Google plays in our diminishing concentration and attention. As we come to depend more and more on Google, we are more likely to replace detailed research with quick Google searches, and focused reading with skimming over blurbs of complete writings. While the article was written in 2008, it is certainly no less true today.
Perhaps the last sentence of the article sums it up the best: "as we come to rely on computers to mediate our understanding of the world, it is our own intelligence that flattens into artificial intelligence."
